Counics
Alexandros Nikolaidis, born in 1971 in Athens, son and grandson of diamond setters and jewellers, had his first contact with jewellery at the age of thirteen, initially through engraving and later diamond setting, which he practiced until the age of 31. Having briefly worked in Cyprus and the United Kingdom, he finally settled on the Greek island of Paros, where his work helped him develop his interest in modern art. In 2014, he started his journey as a jewellery maker, integrating his work experience with his art. In 2019, in collaboration with Manos Koutsofios, they created COUNICS. COUNICS is a collection capturing the intense landscape of the Cyclades, the simple lines of the islands’ architecture and the forms of the traditional boats in the shipyards. He combined traditional goldsmithing with modern jewellery-making techniques, looking for harmonious mountings between very different materials such as metals and exotic woods. In 2021 he was delighted to see one of his pieces, the bracelet ‘Roxanne’, in Diane Venet’s private collection, exhibited in Monaco at Grimaldi Forum and in Luxembourg at Cercle Cité, as part of the exhibition ‘Bijoux d’artistes – de Picasso à Koons’. In 2023 ‘Roxanne’ travelled in Brussels and was exhibited in Villa Empain with the exhibition ‘Ornamentum’. In February 2022 COUNICS participated in the exhibition ‘8th Annual Designers’ Meeting’ + B2B Online Edition’, in Zappeio Megaro, organised by ‘A Jewel Made in Greece’ and it received the People’s Choice Award. Alexandros is preparing his new collection, once more exploring originality in high-quality jewellery making.
